The Advanced
Motorist's benchmark of excellence is 360° vigilance and
observation at all times, in order to be in the "right road
position, travelling at the right speed in the right gear”. This
involves intelligent anticipation of potential hazards and
rapidly changing or complex traffic conditions, as well as being
able to stop safely in
the distance they can see to be clear. Advanced
Motorists usually have no collision history at all and their
standards of skill, safety and smoothness are exemplary.
Enthusiasm and technical skill in handling a motor vehicle under
all conditions are their hallmarks.
Advanced Motorists
are thus safer, more competent drivers because of their aptitude
for concentration, constant care and unfailing courtesy to other
road users.

BIAM ACTIVITIES
BIAM meets six times a year, at 7.30 pm on the second
Thursday in January (AGM), March, May, July, September, and
November, at the
TB Cancer & Health Association,
Point Finger Road, Paget.
A
wide range of topics is covered by guest speakers or specialists,
many of whom are also BIAM Members. Recent topics have included Road
Safety Council developments; drivers’ eyesight and hand-eye
coordination; night driving skills; electric vehicles; emergency
services; in-car video; laser gun use; GPS tracking; motor
insurance; transport policy; routine preventive vehicle maintenance;
accident investigation. No meetings are held during the August and
December vacation periods.
OTHER BENEFITS
Advanced Motorists reveal a tested confidence (not the cocky
overconfidence commonly seen) in using road space wisely and
courteously when handling complex traffic situations. They apply
a critical, ongoing assessment of their own driving standards
and powers of observation. Their fuel consumption and repair
bills are measurably less because of smooth, controlled
acceleration/deceleration techniques and avoidance of harsh or
unnecessary braking. They have increased vehicle sympathy, a
better understanding of its road handling dynamics under varying
conditions and apply routine preventive maintenance.
